ASARUM splendens

Pronounced (ehs-air-uhm  splen-dens)
Fast facts:
  • known as "Chinese Wild Ginger"
  • grow 8-12" in height and spread up to 6' within 10 years
  • rhizotamous root system
  • deer resistant, rabbit resistant
Considered a semi-evergreen, Asarum splendens acts more as an evergreen in our mild Portland winters, with new elongated heart-shaped leaves emerging in spring. The dark blue green foliage has streaks and speckles of silver and is an excellent choice to brighten up your woodland landscape. Great for shade, container planting, and where the soil stays more moist than dry. Like most plants, likes good drainage. Flowers emerge in spring, and though many folks may not consider them show stoppers, they have a strange and unique tubular appearance with 3 petals in a purpley brown shade that we find quite eye-catching. Low maintenance, and is capable of smothering weeds due to the thick mats of root formed underneath the soil. An awesome choice for those who appreciate unusual specimens and like a easy-care plant!

PEPEROMIA graveolens

Pronounced (pep-er-ROH-mee-a gra-vee-OH-lens)
Fast facts:
  • commonly known as 'ruby peperomia' or 'ruby glow'
  • non-toxic to pets
  • semi-succulent
  • native to Ecuador
An easy to care for houseplant we love, Peperomia graveolens is a small succulent shrub growing up to 10" in height. Preferring bright indirect light, it is an excellent choice to sit in the sill of an East or North window, or set back from a West or South window. Leaves are V-shaped with green tops and wine red undersides and stems. This specimen has low watering needs, the soil must dry out in between waterings, and we'd recommend planting in a well-draining soil blend, such as a cactus or succulent mix. If leggy, tops can be pinched off to encourage branching and a denser growth habit. Blooms are long lasting and  emerge as long tendrils from the main growing stems of the plant with a red stem and creamy white to light green flower, deadhead when desired. A great selection for the individual looking to add some low maintenance color in their home or office environment!

We're excited to be offering a selection of seeds this season from Adaptive Seeds out of Sweet Home, OR this year. Founded by Sarah Kleeger and Andrew Still in 2009, Adaptive Seeds is geared toward eco-conscious home gardeners, farmers, and seed saving enthusiasts. It is important to note that that they are a certified organic and that none of their seeds are proprietary hybrids, patented, PVP, or GMO, but rather they are open pollinated with an abundant gene pool. All seeds are grown without the use of pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilizers, and grown personally by Adaptive, or by regional friend, and is noted on variety descriptions. Adaptive Seeds is a partner seed company, and participating breeder with the Open Source Seed Initiative (OSSI). Overall a company doing great things that we are proud to support.

A selection of our favorite flowers, herbs, and vegetables are available at the shop ready to be sown into your gardens! On a personal note, Emily's winter CSA grows their vegetables with Adaptive Seeds, and her favorites are the Black Futsu squash, Candystick Delicata, and Salade de Russie Lettuce. Come in a check it all out!
