Pronounced (san-tow-leen-a  vy-renz)
Fast facts:
  • commonly known as 'green santolina' or 'cotton lavender'
  • drought tolerant ground cover for full sun
  • clumping ground habit with spread of 2-4 ft wide
  • flowering evergreen
An easy and eye catching groundcover, Santolina virens offers a low maintenance and drought tolerant option for a hot and dry bed, container planting, green roof, or rock garden. This textural chartreuse plant spreads into domed mounds approximately 1-2' tall and 2-4" wide. Small yellow blossoms emerge in summer and seed pods form in early fall appearing as though they are floating cottony clouds on top of the ground cover. Options for companion planting are sedums, flax, dianthus ground covers, and more. Due to its evergreen nature and bright color, it is a great choice for a year round container planting, sidewalk bed, or border along garden or walkway. We like it so much, we planted it in the beds along our nursery fence and try to always have it in stock. A specimen sure to brighten your day!

Pronounced (ehs-air-uhm  splen-dens)
Fast facts:
  • known as "Chinese Wild Ginger"
  • grow 8-12" in height and spread up to 6' within 10 years
  • rhizotamous root system
  • deer resistant, rabbit resistant
Considered a semi-evergreen, Asarum splendens acts more as an evergreen in our mild Portland winters, with new elongated heart-shaped leaves emerging in spring. The dark blue green foliage has streaks and speckles of silver and is an excellent choice to brighten up your woodland landscape. Great for shade, container planting, and where the soil stays more moist than dry. Like most plants, likes good drainage. Flowers emerge in spring, and though many folks may not consider them show stoppers, they have a strange and unique tubular appearance with 3 petals in a purpley brown shade that we find quite eye-catching. Low maintenance, and is capable of smothering weeds due to the thick mats of root formed underneath the soil. An awesome choice for those who appreciate unusual specimens and like a easy-care plant!
