POLYPODIUM aureum

Pronounced (poly-poh-dee-uhm  oar-ee-uhm)
Fast facts:
  • name Polypodium is derived from Greek, means 'many little feet'
  • also known as 'Phlebodium aureum'
  • in nature are terrestrial or epiphytic ferns
  • rhizomatous growth habit & rhizomes are covered in numerous golden scales
  • various common names such as 'bear paw fern', 'gold foot fern', and 'blue star fern'

A popular houseplant, this blue-green fern changes dramatically in size once it matures maxing out at 12-50" in height with a 4-20" spread. An excellent choice for those with North or East facing light in their homes, though will work in most light aside from direct or scorching light. We recommend planting in 1 part potting mix to 1 part epiphytic mix, such as orchid bark, moss, etc. In nature this fern is both terrestrial and epiphytic and will prefer a richer soil as such. A shallow and wide container is preferred over a deep and narrow pot so that the rhizomes have enough space to spread. Watering should be tailored so that the soil is moist but not wet, with no sitting water, misting with water is appreciated but not necessary. In time fronds will grow larger and more lobed as the plant matures. Fertilizer is not necessary, but a diluted fertilizer can be applied during summer growing season, take care to not overload the plant.
